What do you want to be when you grow up? is a trick question. When I was little, my parents wore suits and talked in acronyms. From the back seat of the car, ‘work’ sounded stressful and somehow boring at the same time. At school, a job was something you selected from a drop-down menu before picking the relevant subjects that would get you there. It all seemed to suggest that a career was just a staircase. The point was to get to the top, whether you liked heights or not.
