The plan was to write about something else this week. As a bookseller and a writer and fan of Nora Ephron, I feel almost duty bound to include the freshly-sharpened pencils thing somewhere in this letter. I thought I should write something Septemberish, like the rest of my inbox. Something hopeful and Fresh Starterly. And really, I was feeling that way because school has started and suddenly, I can hear the sound of silence again, because there isn’t a small girl just out of shot narrating everything that she’s doing, and thinking, and might do, or think, in the future, too.
I thought I’d write about how I was desperate to write, and as I was in book club meetings all day yesterday, today is the first day I’ve been back at my desk and able to. My new term. My fresh start. But also, despite my breaking out the fleece last week, there’s now a small heatwave in our seaside town and I had to take my dog out first thing after drop-off, before the sand got too hot for her paws. As she’s not much one for conversation, I tend to listen to a podcast on our walks together. Today, I loaded up the latest episode of Always Take Notes which was an interview with the phenomenally successful thriller writer, Lee Child, and now I can think of nothing else.
