About this time of year, I check in with my reading log to see if I’ve read enough Great Books this year. I don’t mean Great Books in the way a Saturday Supplement would compile a list of dusty old tomes to threaten everyone who hasn’t read them and massage everyone who has. I mean, of all the books I’ve read in 2023, are there enough for me to shout about at the end of the year. Do I have a favourite? Is there something I can confidently turn to as my Book of the Year? I’m not making this list yet, though of course, I will in December as is my tedious right as A Person Online Who Reads Books.
Most of the books I’ll include in that list will be ones I’ve already written about here, because they were great at the time I read them - so great that I couldn’t wait to tell you about them. Nothing about that post will be a surprise when it comes. So today I want to draw your attention to a book that I think in all likelihood will also end up on that list.
