I’m always surprised by my own obnoxiousness when it comes to reading classics. When famous stories penetrate our cultural sphere so deeply, it’s easy to forget their origins because the characters separate from their creator. Ownership shifts to the people who perpetuate them, and they’re available for the relentless hamster wheel homage of Hollywood and the miniature memeification of our everyday interactions.
