!!! I wasn’t expecting you to mention the proof here at all but I’m very excited you did! It’s like hearing Janice Long read out your name on the radio. Hope you enjoy Leading Man!
My defunct memory banks have been trying to remember that poem about the plums in the fridge for a donkey's age and there it is, out of the blue. I thank all the stars in Hollywood heaven that your brain prompted you to write that. Hurrah for synapses x
Laying in bed next to my partner while we each read our own things. I gleefully gasped when your name popped into my email. He said “what’s going on?” I said “oh nothing, one of my favorite substacks just sent their Friday morning essay out and I’m just excited to read it!” Just got to the end and sighed. Another great start to my Friday.
Loved reading this so much. Tell me about the covert rain!!!! Every day this week those ninja rain mist droplets have managed to get inside my robe. Rain that is stealth like here in Wales. My ridgebacks hate it. They originated from Rhodesia now Zimbabwe, so rain is like acid on this fur 😂
I’ve been doing through a reading slump. Hope springs from your bookshop missives. You’ve provided several possibilities of The Right Book at the Right Time. Thank you from Seattle, where we spend some time talking about rain.
I read this first thing this morning and I've been thinking about it all day. Specifically, the poem, which delighted me so much I had to share it with my husband just now as we chatted before bed. This did involve finding and reading him the original, so I could then find and read him yours, so that we could both chuckle heartily into the dark before we fall asleep. This is typical - in the few weeks I've been reading your writing I've thought about it often. Thank you for sharing your wonderful thoughts!
Another great receipt Katie! I found myself remembering all my old glassses fondly, and wondering what I did with them! I would genuinely love to see some of my old teenage glasses! They would be in fashion now!!
I can't remember how I found your Substack but I LOVE it! I live in Australia now but I'm originally from Wigan and have visited your town once while my dad played golf although that was at least 25 yrs ago. It's one of my many dreams to open a bookshop (we actually don't have enough here in Adelaide IMHO) but until then I'm living my dream vicariously through your updates!
Why do dust and dead bugs in windows provide such a visceral reaction for anyone who has worked in a shop? I have been catapulted back a decade with that line.
Must remember…tea and milk, tea and milk, tea and milk

A delightful post. I especially loved, like, all of it. But “This is Just to Say” had me rolling.
Thrilled that you mentioned Emily St John Mandel. Not enough people are talking about her work imho. Brilliant books.

It’s not the point to really get hooked on and I know I live in the sticks but do people really deliver/have delivered a single coffee to their home?!

The ‘This is just to say’ ode to fridge coffee is hilarious.

Love your articles and the humor is a blast.

I really enjoyed reading this post - it's lovely hear about life in an indie bookshop. Hope you managed to get hold of some tea and milk! x
