Thanks for this - I "lol"ed several times while reading and hope that I did not improperly disturb my partner next to me on his zoom meetings (no, he isn't a zoom priest) (if I did, it was worth it).

Those Helen Garner covers are so lovely!

Ooh yes, totally invested in the Japanese mystery and the Catholic priest requirement. And note to self, make a list of the book recommendations for future reference 😀

Katie if you are planning to write a short story collection we need to know what happens next with the man looking for the priest and the Japanese author, pleeeeease.

Hi, Australian reader here. Helen Garner is very well known here (not surprising) - something of a national treasure. This House of Grief is a true story and will break your heart - big tears warning, especially if you have children. Helen is a beautiful writer so def read her books though!

I read this one last year. She has a superb essay in it about becoming invisible as she ages.

So many mysteries! Love the idea of a temporary problem that requires a catholic priest. Maybe his beloved was just a teensy bit possessed? Like, just the mild rash version of possessed? Bit of holy water'll get rid of that, no bother.

Re your Japanese mail - might it be because your shop is called Storytellers Inc....? Just call me Miss Marple.

I SO love the Japanese shtick. Those beautiful stamps, the whole mystery thing. I am enthralled.

Bringing myself back down to earth, there is a good piece on Helen Garner by Max Liu last weekend’s FT. Yes, I too, find myself often reading about her at the moment and was very caught by this from the piece

“ ‘ Garner’s work…constantly insists on the connection between writing about life and comprehending it’ wrote the critic James Wood in a 2016 essay. She may be the greatest Australian writer too many of us have yet to read.”

And, if she’s good enough for Kate Atkinson (let alone James Wood…), she’s good enough for me.

So many loose ends in this receipt that call out for further investigation… 🕵🏾‍♂️

Last bit reminds of fashion designer Paul Smith. He once joked years ago that rabbits were his lucky charm and since then it became very public (and often features in his collections), so much so that tons of people send him rabbits of all shapes and sizes from all over the world! Pictures, prints, figurines, anything rabbit related. If you ever see a picture of his office, it’s filled with them!
