🚩🚩🚩🚩Offering one small, unsolicited testimonial as a paid subscriber - Katie’s essays and group discussions never disappoint! Her book club selections are always engaging and fresh, and it’s always nice to spend time in her company. So very glad she drifted in and I had the presence of mind to tag along. 🚩🚩🚩🚩

Congratulations again on the book news, Katie 🥳

I buy picturebooks in each country I visit (that makes me sound like a globetrotter which I am most definitely not) I love to have them as a little souvenirs 🙂

Would Americans call "elastic" a hair band? A rubber band to bundle papers? A bouncing ball? Hmmm.

I feel like she meant a length of elastic for something crafty.. like dressmaking etc., not crafty like...devious.

Congrats on your new book!

Unsure about the elastic. Shall consider investigating and report back. It’s Brighton though, so, possibly?

My friend in Austin, Texas is lying on a daybed with a fan directed on her like Vivien Leigh in Streetcar Named Desire and I am wearing a bobble hat here in Hastings, East Sussex. I like your MAGNANIMOUS suggestion that we buy our books from a local bookshop, because I like buying books from you (288 miles away according to the interwebs) but I will do so accordingly JUST THIS ONCE.

Weather is so quirky, I love it. I’m down the road from you in Brighton, and it’s quite warm and sunny here. Short sleeves for me, a pleasant change from last night’s rain ^_^ (I miss the US though, such great warm temps there.)

Ooh a fellow Brightonian! [waves] I love Kemptown Books and the Feminist Bookshop. I keep thinking it would be great to try and sort a Brighton Substack get together somehow - but not sure how to smoke people out from behind their screens into the big wide world. Maybe a bookshop cafe would do it eh 😃 And the less said about the weather the better I think.

Ooh! Hi there! *waves back*

I finally walked by the Feminist Bookshop last week! I’m yet to go in though. I don’t know why, it’s just not happened yet. But also last week, I came across a charming little book I would love to own, and they just happen to have it in stock, so I think that’s a good reason for a visit now :)

Yes! I’d love a get together. I was on the precipice of trying to organize one earlier this year, when Substack announced city meetups and were helping promote those organizing them. Maybe we could connect in person, and then see about organizing one?

I remember a couple of people on the Substack meetup thread who were interested and local, but I don’t think anyone wanted to take the organizational reins at the time (and life got in the way for me, and to be fair I didn’t want to do it solo at the time either!)

Oh that's brilliant to hear there was some interest in a Brighton meetup - would be great to revisit! Definitely up for getting together just us two to see what we could maybe do. I'll DM you 😊
