A great post because I love Moomins (I have Moomin tattoos). Also because I love Ali Smith. I got a copy of Gliff from Netgalley and am so excited. If you decide you love her after reading it, the seasons quartet are my favourite of hers but mostly everything she writes is amazing. Oh and I hated Damascus Station. It annoyed me hugely but each to his/her own
The season quartet is the absolute best. I want to teach a class on the political novel and that’s on my list (no one will let me do this because my students don’t read sadly). The other one is the book about releasing wolves to the wild as Scotland becomes independent.
Could you tell me the title of the Ali Smith book that's about releasing wolves into the wild? I can't figure it out, but it sounds like something I'd really enjoy! Thanks!
I don’t feel short changed at all, especially as you have observed the same thing about today’s dress code as I have done. I’ve just arrived in Belfast, layered up with puffer coat, scarf, boots, hat in my rucksack just in case, but 50% of the locals are wearing shorts and flip flops, the other half over-dressed like me.
Ah, short changed like a book token card with no credit, huh?
It actually felt like you packed in loads. Plus Moomins … and the laugh out loud ‘I don’t remember what my son is reading but could you tell me something important about it anyway’ quote!
Sounds like they're only famous in Europe? Some US readers don't know them either. They're so lovely! They're from Finland - by Tove Jansson, a wonderful writer and artist.
They are not. They are only that famous here in the UK. You guys are crazy about them 🤣. I think it's possibly because the comic strips were originally first published in the UK in the Daily Mirror (I think), despite TV being Finnish.
Any shortening of the substack was forgotten when I saw the photo of you in your scarf and discovered Moomins. Yes, I live under a rock in US. I have never heard of them but they are so adorable. Am I forgiven for thinking they were hippos at first?
Wow! ‘Her card company had frozen her card after a suspicious transaction because she’d suddenly bought something in a hardware store! (Sexism!!)´
I wonder if anyone was later getting card-queried for buying Moomin merch out of the blue!
We've noticed suspicious Moomin activity on your card. Alert!
So glad I’ve found you. How lovely to hear all about what goes on in the shop and get ideas for books to read as well.
Welcome, Welcome!
Love the packaging worn as a scarf 🧣 the photos made me crack up 🤣🤣🤣
I absolutely *loved* the packaging scarf! 🧣😁
Not short changed here - so much bonus material recently! Have a great weekend, Katie x

Hi, I'm fairly sure that's the Wolf Border by Sarah Hall, not Ali Smith. Excellent book and well worth reading.
The class sounds mighty. I’d love to attend it if you ever decide to freestyle it. Have you read Companion Piece?

Incredible! I’m a Californian in Scotland and am basically never warm.
The cauliflower quote is perfection!
What kind of person can save half a kinder bueno until tomorrow???
hahaha (the sort of person who had a giant cookie before their lunch)
Love the Moomins too!
How did that lady not buy the moomin wrapping paper after being so excited about it ?!
I enjoyed the ‘phenomenon of the Moomins’ podcast , some of your customers might like it too .
I’m just here to say what do you mean you’ve never read Ali Smith or Rachel Kushner?!
(Love the packaging scarf.)
I know, I KNOW but I've still got some life left to rectify this. Expect me to obzezzzed before the end of the year.

I’ve never heard of Moomins. What are they? Perhaps it’s a UK thing? I’m in Australia.

Not short changed at all, delightful as ever 🌈

They are definitely hippo-esque, but they aren't technically hippos because they're Moomins! I'm so glad you've discovered them now - I love them!
I too love the Moomins!
You could don a bubble pack gown for the next Met Gala.
just waiting for my invite!
