Thanks for this brilliant read and so interesting to learn more about Diane Williams. She’s so influential but it’s hard to find her books here. Thanks for sharing the links! 🔗 exciting stuff ahead to listen to!

Hi Katie! So interesting, I really enjoyed this and will look up Diane Williams and Kathryn Scanlan! I have been known to enjoy a short story. I recently read a book of George Saunders’ short stories, Pastoralia and was reminded that they can be very satisfying. My very best, and oft returned to short story collection is Kiss Kiss and Someone Like You, and are there some in The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar? All by the wonderful Roald Dahl of course.

Some of my most enjoyed books recently have been whoppers that I eyed with caution for a while before opening. Memorably, The Goldfinch, which I bloody loved! And The Luminaries, which I really enjoyed. Both ginormous beasts, and surprisingly quick reads because I enjoyed them so much! Xx

Ooh I've had The Luminaries on my shelf for SO long and I can't bring myself to pick it up -it's such a beast. But you're right, when you're into it you end up reading them quickly anyway. I also like George Saunders, particularly on Audio. And yes,l of course, Dahl's shorts are such a joy, such clever little ideas, good plots for such short stories! X

I’ve not tried George Saunders on audio, but that sounds like a good idea! Definitely recommend The Luminaries, I was surprised at how much of an easy read it was!

Really interesting Katie! I haven’t read much in the way of short stories - I think it takes me a while to get into anything a bit literary so once I’m in I like it to go on for a while. I want the whole 500 pages! The short stories I’ve read and reread are John Wyndham and Somerset Maugham - I think because they feel like whole condensed novels with such satisfying conclusions to them.

Yes it's tricky to find a short story that gives you a satisfying conclusion - so many are left open to interpretation and that can feel frustrating. I've never read any John Wyndham!

Wow! So many new thoughts to think with this piece! Thank you. Listened to the interview and I’ve now read Kick the Latch and remembering writing course exercises that resonated with me and how much I enjoyed reading flash fiction - like a painting class/photography class/poetry seminar all rolled into one. Also makes me think of cameo brooches - so much captured in one small, fine frame.
